Drug Description

Indications

Beclomethasone is a medication used for the prevention and control of asthma symptoms such as wheezing and shortness of breath. This medication is classified as a corticosteroid and acts directly in the lungs by reducing irritation and swelling in the airways, making breathing easier.

This medication is meant to be used regularly to prevent breathing difficulties, and is not intended for immediate relief during an asthma attack. In the event of an attack, patients should use their quick-relief inhaler as prescribed.

Uses and Dosage

Prior to using this medication, read the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist. It should be reviewed before starting the medication and with each refill. For proper use, follow the illustrated directions provided. Any questions regarding the medication should be directed to your doctor, pharmacist, or respiratory therapist.

When using a canister for the first time or if it has not been used for 10 days or more, prime the inhaler in accordance with the provided instructions. Shaking the inhaler is not necessary, and care should be taken to avoid getting the medication in your eyes during priming or use.

This medication should be inhaled by mouth, typically 2 times per day or as directed by your doctor. The appropriate dosage will be determined based on your age, medical condition, and response to treatment. If the prescribed dose is 2 puffs, wait at least one minute between them.

When using other inhalers concurrently, wait at least one minute between the use of each medication, and use this drug (the corticosteroid) last.

To avoid dry mouth, hoarseness, and oral yeast infections, rinse your mouth with water, and spit out after each use, without swallowing the rinse water.

The number of inhalations used should be tracked, and the canister should be discarded after using the labeled number of inhalations on the package, even if it feels like medication remains in the canister. Follow the provided instructions for cleaning the inhaler, without washing or putting any part of it in water.

This medication should be used on a regular basis to gain maximum benefits. To ensure proper adherence, use it at the same time(s) each day. Do not alter the dose, frequency or duration of this drug without consulting your doctor. Doing so may increase the risk of side effects and worsen your condition. Do not abruptly stop taking this medication, as it may lead to a worsening of certain conditions. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased upon discontinuation.
