Synvisc-One is used to treat knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) who have not responded well to non-pharmacologic therapy and simple pain relievers like acetaminophen. 

Derived from avian combs, hylan gf 20 resembles the synovial fluid enveloping human joints. Its potential mechanism involves lubrication and cushioning within the joint, facilitating seamless knee movement and potentially reducing discomfort. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before the administration of Synvisc-One and with every prescription refill, carefully review the patient information leaflet provided by your healthcare provider. Should you have any queries, consult your physician or pharmacist. 

This medication is directly injected into the affected knee joint by a healthcare professional, delivering up to six months of pain relief in a single administration. 

Prior to medication administration, your doctor may conduct joint fluid extraction if needed. 

Following the Synvisc-One injection, abstain from activities that place strain on your knee, such as jogging, tennis, lifting heavy objects, or extended periods of standing, for 48 hours. 

Moreover, following the injection, initial pain and swelling in the knee may occur. Should these symptoms persist or worsen, promptly consult your doctor. 

Side Effects

Common Side Effects 

• Pain, swelling, redness, warmth, stiffness, puffiness, or bruising of the injection site 
• Headache 
• Muscle pain 
• Trouble walking 
• Fever 
• Chills 
• Nausea 
• Numbness or tingly feeling 
• Dizziness 
• Fatigue 
• Itching or skin irritation around the knee 

Serious Side Effects 

• Back pain 
• Severe headache 
• Fast or pounding heartbeat 

Inform your doctor right away if any of the serious side effects above are experienced. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Synvisc-One may occur. Seek prompt medical assistance in case of any signs of an allergic reaction, such as: 

• Rash 
• Severe dizziness 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Itching or swelling (particularly of face/tongue/throat)

Cautions

• Infections within the knee joint

Notify all healthcare providers of your current medication use and any changes you make, as Synvisc-One may interact with other drugs, including prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, and herbal products. 

The potential effects of Synvisc-One on fetal development remain uncertain. Inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant or intend to conceive while undergoing this treatment. 

The potential transfer of Synvisc-One into breast milk and its impact on nursing infants is unknown. Consult your doctor before using this medication while breastfeeding.
