Description

Indications

Trileptal oral suspension is an antiepileptic drug indicated for the treatment of partial seizures with or without secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It can be prescribed alone or with other medications to treat seizure disorders (epilepsy).

Trileptal oral suspension contains the active ingredient oxcarbazepine, converted in the body to its active form, known as monohydroxy derivative (MHD). MHD is believed to inhibit voltage-gated sodium channels, which are involved in the transmission of electrical impulses in the brain. By blocking these channels, Trileptal helps to prevent excessive and abnormal electrical activity that can lead to seizures.

Use and Dosage

Trileptal oral suspension can be taken by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually twice daily. Follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding whether to take it with meals. Pour the measured dose of Trileptal oral suspension into a glass or directly into the mouth. If using a glass, drink the entire contents. If taking it directly, swallow the medication without chewing.

Before each use, shake the bottle well to ensure proper mixing of the medication. Use a calibrated measuring device or an oral syringe provided with the medication to accurately measure the prescribed dose. Do not use a regular household teaspoon as it may not provide the correct dosage.

The specific dosage of the suspension will depend on factors such as the patient’s age, weight, and individual response to the medication. Follow the dosing instructions provided by the healthcare provider.

Do not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. Some conditions (such as seizures) may become worse when the drug is suddenly stopped. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased. It should be stored at room temperature, away from light and moisture. It should be kept out of the reach of children.

Cautions

  • Allergic reactions: If you have a known allergy to oxcarbazepine or any other ingredients in Trileptal oral suspension, you should avoid taking it.
  • Blood disorders: Trileptal may affect blood cell counts, leading to conditions such as low white blood cell count or low platelet count. Regular blood tests may be required to monitor these levels during treatment.
  • Liver problems: Trileptal can affect liver function, so inform your healthcare provider if you have any liver disease or history of liver problems. Liver function tests may be recommended before and during treatment.
  • Kidney problems: Trileptal is primarily eliminated from the body through the kidneys. If you have kidney problems, your healthcare provider may need to adjust the dosage or monitor your kidney function.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Trileptal may pose risks to a developing fetus. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, discuss the potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. Trileptal can also pass into breast milk, so consult your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding.
  • Drug interactions: Trileptal may interact with other medications, including hormonal contraceptives, certain antiepileptic drugs, and others. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.
  • Driving and operating machinery: Trileptal can cause dizziness, drowsiness, and coordination problems. If you experience these side effects, avoid activities that require mental alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.
