Indications 

Proventil Inhalation Solution contains albuterol sulfate, which is a medication used to treat wheezing and shortness of breath caused by breathing problems such as asthma. It also helps to treat chest tightness caused by lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; a group of diseases that affect the lungs and airways). 

Proventil Inhalation Solution contains albuterol as an active ingredient, which is a bronchodilator medication. It works by relaxing the muscles around the airways in the lungs, allowing them to open up and improve airflow.  

Use and Dosage 

Proventil Inhalation is available in a solution form that is used with a jet nebulizer. Proventil Inhalation Solution should only be used with a jet nebulizer and not with other types of inhalation devices. Properly clean and maintain the nebulizer equipment to ensure effective and safe use. 

To inhale the solution using a nebulizer, follow these steps;  

1. Remove one vial of albuterol solution from the foil pouch. Leave the rest of the vials in the pouch until you are ready to use them. 
2. Look at the liquid in the vial. It should be clear and colorless. Do not use the vial if the liquid is cloudy or discolored. 
3. Twist off the top of the vial and squeeze all the liquid into the nebulizer reservoir. If you are using your nebulizer to inhale other medications, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you can place the other medications in the reservoir along with albuterol. 
4. Connect the nebulizer reservoir to the mouthpiece or face mask. 
5. Connect the nebulizer to the compressor. 
6. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth or put on the face mask. Sit in an upright, comfortable position and turn on the compressor. 
7. Breathe in calmly, deeply, and evenly for about 5-15 minutes until mist stops forming in the nebulizer chamber. 
8. Clean your nebulizer regularly. Follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about cleaning your nebulizer. 

The recommended dosage and frequency of Albuterol Solution may vary depending on the specific condition and age of the patient. The usual dose for adults and children is 2.5-5 mg every 20 minutes for three doses, followed by 2.5-10 mg every 1-4 hours as needed or 10-15 minutes of continuous nebulization.

• Swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs 

Cautions 

• Age-related heart problems: Elderly patients may be more likely to have age-related heart problems, which may require caution in the dosage of Proventil Inhalation Solution. 
• Pre-existing medical conditions: Caution should be exercised if you have certain medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, or hyperthyroidism. Your medical history with your healthcare provider before using Proventil Inhalation Solution. 
• Allergic reactions: Some individuals may be allergic to albuterol or other components of Proventil Inhalation Solution. If you have a history of allergic reactions, inform your healthcare provider. 
• Drug interactions: Albuterol Solution may interact with other medications, including beta-blockers and diuretics. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including prescription, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal supplements. 
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety of Proventil Inhalation Solution during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established. Consult with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using the medication. 
• Severe asthma: Albuterol Solution is generally safe and effective for treating asthma, but it may not be suitable for individuals with severe asthma. If you have severe asthma, discuss your condition with your healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate treatment options. 
• Cardiovascular effects: Albuterol, the active ingredient in Proventil Inhalation Solution, can potentially cause cardiovascular effects such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and irregular heart rhythms. Individuals with existing cardiovascular conditions should use Albuterol Solution with caution and under the guidance of a healthcare professional. 
• Hypokalemia: Albuterol may cause a decrease in potassium levels in the blood, leading to a condition called hypokalemia. This is more likely to occur in individuals who are taking high doses of albuterol or who have pre-existing low potassium levels. Monitoring of potassium levels may be necessary in such cases. 
• Tolerance and paradoxical bronchospasm: Prolonged use of Albuterol Solution may lead to a reduced response to the medication over time. Additionally, paradoxical bronchospasm, which causes a worsening of breathing difficulties, may occur. If either of these situations arise, consult with your healthcare provider. 
• Rescue vs. maintenance use: Albuterol Solution is commonly used as a rescue medication to provide immediate relief of asthma symptoms. However, it is not intended for long-term maintenance use.
