Indications 

Naphcon A is indicated for the temporary alleviation of ocular redness and itching associated with allergens, including ragweed, pollen, grass, animal dander, and hair. 

Naphcon A is formulated with two active ingredients: naphazoline and pheniramine.  

Categorized as a vasoconstrictor, naphazoline diminishes eye redness by constricting swollen ocular blood vessels. On the other hand, pheniramine is an antihistamine that counteracts the effects of histamine, a natural chemical in the body that triggers allergic symptoms. 

Uses and Dosage 

Before starting treatment with Naphcon A and every time you get a refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any queries or uncertainties. 

Typically, Naphcon A is administered in the affected eye(s) up to 4 times daily as needed or as directed by the doctor. 

Before applying the eye drops:  

1. Wash your hands thoroughly. 
2. Visually inspect the eye drops. If the liquid has altered color or appears cloudy, refrain from using it. Dispose of the medication in a location inaccessible to children and pets.  
3. Remove contact lenses (if wearing). Wait at least 10 minutes after administering the medication before reinserting contact lenses. 
4. To prevent contamination, avoid touching the tip of the dropper or allowing it to come into contact with your eyes or any other surfaces. 

To properly apply the eye drops: 

1. Tilt your head back and look upward, then gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pouch. 
2. Directly position the dropper over the eye and carefully place one drop into the created pouch. 
3. Look downward and gently close your eyes for approximately 1 to 2 minutes. 
4. Apply gentle pressure with one finger at the corner of the eye near the nose to prevent the medication from draining. Avoid blinking and rubbing the eye. 
5. Repeat steps 1-4 if your prescribed dose includes more than one drop, and apply the medication to the other eye if instructed. 
6. Do not rinse the dropper. After each use, securely replace the dropper cap. 

To avoid any potential interactions, allow a minimum of 5 minutes between applying different eye medications, including drops and ointments. Prioritize the use of eye drops over ointments to facilitate their absorption into the eye. 

If your symptoms do not improve within 3 days of treatment, discontinue the use of this eye drop and consult your doctor.  

Side Effects 

Listed below are the potential adverse effects of Naphcon A. Tell your doctor promptly if any of these symptoms last or worsen. 

Common Side Effects 

• Mild burning or stinging sensation in the eye 
• Dilated pupils or blurred vision 
• Increased sensitivity of the eyes to light 

Serious Side Effects 

• Persistent or worsening eye redness 
• Eye pain 
• Alterations in vision 

Stop using Naphcon A and call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the severe side effects. 

Allergic Reactions 

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Naphcon A may occur. Seek urgent medical assistance if any of the following symptoms are observed: 

• Hives 
• Difficult breathing 
• Face, lips, tongue, or throat swelling

Cautions 

Do not use Naphcon A if you have any known hypersensitivities, especially to naphazoline and pheniramine maleate. 

This eye drop may contain inactive ingredients, including preservatives like benzalkonium chloride, that could trigger allergic reactions or other complications. Consult your pharmacist for additional information. 

To ensure Naphcon A is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of: 

• Diabetes 
• Glaucoma 
• Heart problems, such as heart attack or chest pain 
• High blood pressure 
• Eye infection or injury 
• Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) 
• Difficulty urinating 

Prior to using Naphcon A, consult a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. Certain medicines may result in undesirable or hazardous effects when used concurrently. 

Temporary blurred vision may occur after using Naphcon A. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in tasks that demand clear vision until it is safe to do so. 

Pregnant women should not use Naphcon A without consulting a doctor, as it is unclear whether this medication may pose any risks to an unborn baby. 

The potential transfer of naphazoline and pheniramine into breast milk and its impact on nursing infants is uncertain. Consult your doctor before using this medication while breastfeeding.
