Drug Description

Indications

Xalatan is an ophthalmic solution prescribed to lower elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in individuals diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

As a prostaglandin analog, Xalatan enhances the drainage of intraocular fluid, facilitating the removal of excess fluid and subsequently lowering eye pressure.

Uses and Dosage

Before using Xalatan and with every prescription refill, carefully review the available medication guide and patient information leaflet. For any queries or concerns, do not hesitate to consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Typically, one drop of Xalatan is instilled in the affected eye(s) once daily in the evening, as prescribed by the doctor.

Prior to applying Xalatan, remove contact lenses if you wear them. Allow a minimum of 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Visually examine the eye drop before administration and do not use it if there are any changes in color or the presence of particles. Reach out to your pharmacist for a replacement medication.

To ensure correct usage of this eye drop, adhere to the following instructions:

  1. Wash hands before applying the eye drops.
  2. Slightly tilt your head back and gently pull down your lower eyelid to form a small pocket.
  3. Position the dropper tip facing downward, above your eye.
  4. Look upward and away from the dropper, then gently squeeze out a drop.
  5. Close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes with your head slightly tilted downward, avoiding blinking or squinting.
  6. Lightly press your finger against the inner corner of your eye for approximately 1 minute to prevent the liquid from draining out.
  7. If your prescription calls for more than one drop, repeat steps 2-6.
  8. If you need to apply the medication to both eyes, repeat the entire process for the other eye.
  9. Always replace the dropper cap after each use without rinsing the dropper.

To prevent contamination, refrain from touching the tip of the dropper or letting it touch the eye or any other surfaces.

For best results, use Xalatan regularly, exactly as directed, and at the same time daily.

Continue using this eye medication even if you are feeling well, as many individuals with glaucoma or elevated eye pressure do not experience noticeable symptoms.

Store Xalatan at room temperature upon initial use, safeguarding it from moisture, heat, and light. Ensure the bottle is securely closed when not in use. Dispose of the medication after six weeks from the bottle’s first opening.

Store an unopened bottle of Xalatan in a refrigerator, ensuring it is not frozen.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Xalatan, inform your doctor if you have any known allergies, particularly to latanoprost.

Consult your pharmacist for further details on Xalatan, as it may contain inactive components like benzalkonium chloride that can elicit allergic reactions or other complications.

To ensure Xalatan is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of other eye conditions (e.g., macular edema, iritis/uveitis, lens extraction/aphakia, herpes eye infection).

Certain products, such as topically applied bimatoprost for eyelash treatment, can potentially interact with Xalatan. To minimize the likelihood of such interactions, inform your healthcare providers about all the products you use, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

In the event of an eye infection, injury, or surgery, consult your doctor regarding the ongoing use of your current Xalatan bottle. Your doctor may recommend switching to a new bottle.

Xalatan can gradually increase brown pigment in the eye color and eyelids, along with thicker eyelash growth. These changes develop slowly and might not be immediately noticeable for months or years. They could persist permanently even after you stop treatment, typically affecting only the treated eye and potentially resulting in a cosmetic disparity in eye and eyelash color between the two eyes.

Following the administration of Xalatan, your vision may experience temporary blurriness or instability. Refrain from driving, operating machinery, or engaging in tasks that demand clear vision until you can do so safely.

The potential impact of Xalatan on an unborn baby is uncertain. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, inform your doctor.

The potential transfer of latanoprost into breast milk is uncertain. Seek advice from your healthcare provider prior to nursing.
