Description

Indications

Artane is a prescribed medication used in combination with other drugs to alleviate symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, a nervous system disorder that impairs movement, muscle control, and balance.

Artane is also indicated to manage extrapyramidal symptoms, such as tremors and slurred speech, induced by central nervous system drugs including dibenzoxazepines, phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, and butyrophenones.

Classified as an anticholinergic drug, Artane works by easing muscle tension and nerve impulses that regulate muscle activity.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking Artane and with each prescription refill, carefully read its medication guide and patient information leaflet. For questions or clarifications, do not hesitate to ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Artane dosage is determined based on the patient’s medical condition, age, and response to the treatment. Typically, doctors initiate this medication with a low dosage, gradually increasing it to determine the optimal dosage.

Artane is usually taken 3 to 4 times daily, regardless of food intake. However, taking this medication with food may reduce stomach upset.

If Artane is being taken for medication-induced side effects, the doctor may recommend taking it regularly or on an as-needed basis.  If treating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, the doctor may adjust the dose of other medications, such as levodopa. Adhere closely to your doctor’s directions.

Do not exceed the prescribed dosage, frequency, or duration of Artane use. Discontinue use as directed, as abruptly ceasing treatment may worsen certain conditions. Gradually reducing the dosage may be necessary.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Artane, inform your doctor and pharmacist if you have any known allergies, especially to trihexyphenidyl, other medicines, or to any ingredients present in Artane tablets.

To ensure Artane is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, specifically regarding any history of:

  • Glaucoma
  • Breathing difficulties (e.g., asthma, emphysema)
  • Diarrhea caused by infection
  • Heart problems (e.g., angina, heart attack, heart failure, irregular heartbeat)
  • High/low blood pressure
  • Stomach/intestinal problems (e.g., chronic constipation, ileus, blockage, ulcerative colitis, acid reflux, ulcer)
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • Mental/mood problems (e.g., anxiety, dementia, psychosis)
  • Certain muscle diseases (myasthenia gravis)
  • Certain nerve diseases (autonomic neuropathy)
  • Seizures
  • Stroke
  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • Difficulty urinating (e.g., due to enlarged prostate, neurogenic bladder)
  • Personal or family history of substance use disorder (e.g., overuse or addiction to drugs/alcohol)

Artane may interact with pramlintide, corticosteroids, and potassium tablets/capsules, potentially affecting its efficacy or causing severe side effects. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal products, to avoid such interactions.

Review the labels on all your medications, including allergy or cough-and-cold products, as they may contain ingredients that cause drowsiness. Consult your pharmacist to learn how to use these products safely.

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you use products that cause drowsiness. Examples of such products are:

  • Opioid pain or cough relievers such as: codeine and hydrocodone
  • Alcohol
  • Marijuana (cannabis)
  • Drugs for sleep or anxiety such as: alprazolam, lorazepam, and zolpidem
  • Muscle relaxants such as: carisoprodol and cyclobenzaprine
  • Antihistamines such as: cetirizine
  • Diphenhydramine

Certain antacids and diarrhea drugs can reduce the effectiveness of Artane, while Artane may inhibit the absorption of ketoconazole when taken together. To avoid any interference, take Artane one hour before antacids that contain magnesium, aluminum, or calcium, and at least two hours after ketoconazole. In addition, space out doses of Artane and certain diarrhea drugs, such as kaolin, pectin, and attapulgite, by one to two hours.

Use caution when engaging in hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery, as Artane may cause dizziness or blurred vision. If you experience such symptoms, refrain from such activities.

Artane reduces saliva production, which can lead to dental problems such as cavities and gum disease. Maintain good dental hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly and scheduling regular dental check-ups.

Artane can reduce sweating, leading to a potentially dangerous increase in body temperature (hyperthermia), especially in hot weather, during exercise, or with alcohol use. Stay hydrated, dress lightly, and seek medical attention if you experience signs of hyperthermia such as mood changes, headache, or dizziness.

Artane should only be used during pregnancy when necessary. Consult with your healthcare provider regarding the potential risks and benefits.

Consult your doctor before taking Artane if you are breastfeeding, as it is unclear if its active ingredient (trihexyphenidyl) passes into breast milk.
