Daraprim is a pharmacological agent with antiparasitic properties, effectively inhibiting the growth and reproduction of parasites within the body. 

In the realm of therapeutic applications, Daraprim finds utility in the treatment and prevention of specific forms of malaria in both adults and children. This medication is generally not considered the first-line choice for malaria prophylaxis during travel. When employed for malaria treatment purposes, it should be administered in conjunction with a more rapidly-acting anti-malaria medication, such as chloroquine or quinine. 

Moreover, Daraprim serves as a treatment option for toxoplasmosis, an infection caused by the Toxoplasma parasite. 

Uses and Dosage 

Administer this medication orally, typically once or twice daily, or as specifically instructed by your healthcare provider. Take this medication with food to mitigate the occurrence of nausea and vomiting. In the event of severe or persistent vomiting, your doctor may consider adjusting your dosage or advising discontinuation of the medication.  

To counteract potential blood-related issues caused by pyrimethamine, your doctor will prescribe an additional medication (folic/folinic acid) to be taken in accordance with their precise instructions. Adequately follow your doctor’s directions. 

For optimal efficacy, maintain a consistent level of the drug in your system. Take this medication, alongside other prescribed antiparasitic drugs, regularly and precisely as directed by your doctor. To facilitate adherence, establish a routine by taking the medication at the same designated time(s) each day. 

Dosage adjustments are determined based on the type of infection, your medical condition, age, and response to treatment. The duration of treatment is contingent upon the specific infection.  

Under no circumstances should the dosage of this medication be altered without medical guidance. It is crucial to neither exceed nor reduce the prescribed dosage.  

Completion of the entire prescription, as directed by your doctor, is imperative, even if you start to feel better. Modifying or interrupting your dosage without approval from your doctor may lead to an increase in parasite count, rendering the infection more challenging to treat (resistant), or exacerbating side effects. 

Side effects 

Allergic Reaction

The occurrence of an allergic reaction necessitates immediate medical assistance. If you experience any of the following signs, please seek emergency medical help: 

• Hives 
• Difficulty breathing 
• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat 

Severe Side Effects

Serious side effects have been associated with the usage of Daraprim. If any of the following symptoms manifest, discontinue the use of Daraprim and promptly contact your doctor: 

• Sore throat and tongue swelling 
• Pale skin, easy bruising, or purple spots under the skin 
• Initial manifestation of any skin rash, regardless of its severity 
• Blood in the urine 
• Symptoms of fever, cold, or flu 
• New or worsening cough, accompanied by fever and breathing difficulties 
• Irregular heartbeats 
• Signs of folate deficiency, including unusual fatigue, mood changes, nausea, mouth sores, stomach discomfort, and loss of appetite 
• Severe skin reaction, characterized by fever, sore throat, facial or tongue swelling, eye burning, skin pain, and subsequent development of a spreading red or purple rash, particularly in the face or upper body, accompanied by blistering and peeling 

Common Side Effects

Common side effects associated with Daraprim may include: 

• Vomiting 
• Loss of appetite 

Cautions 

Ensure that you inform all healthcare providers involved in your care about your current use of Daraprim. This includes doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and dentists. 

Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage of Daraprim as directed by your doctor. Taking more than the recommended dosage can significantly increase the risk of experiencing severe adverse effects. 

Be aware that the probability of developing cancer may be higher following the usage of Daraprim. It is advisable to have a discussion with your doctor regarding this matter. 

Regular monitoring of your blood work, as instructed by your doctor, is essential. Engage in a conversation with your doctor to gain a better understanding of the recommended blood work schedule. 

To minimize the occurrence of side effects, the supplementation of folic acid or leucovorin may be necessary. Discuss this with your doctor to determine the appropriate course of action. 

Keep Daraprim out of reach of children, as accidental exposure may result in fatal consequences. If a child inadvertently consumes Daraprim, seek immediate medical assistance.
