Description
Indications
Nytol Extra Strength is a sleep aid medication indicated for the relief of occasional sleeplessness and to help improve the quality of sleep.
Nytol contains diphenhydramine hydrochloride as its active ingredient, which works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that is involved in allergic reactions and can also cause drowsiness. By blocking histamine, diphenhydramine can help induce drowsiness and improve the quality of sleep, making it an effective sleep aid medication.
Diphenhydramine also causes drowsiness and can be used by adults and children 12 years of age and older who occasionally have trouble sleeping (insomnia).
Use and Dosage
Nytol Extra Strength comes in the form of caplet to take it by mouth as directed by a doctor. Swallow the caplet or tablet whole with water. It is intended for use as a sleep aid, so it should only be taken before going to bed. To take Nytol Extra Strength, you should follow the instructions provided on the label or as directed by your doctor.
The usual dose for adults and children 12 years and older is one caplet at bedtime if needed, or as directed by a doctor. If you feel drowsy in the morning, you should reduce the dose to 0.5 caplet. Do not take more than the directed amount.
Do not take this product if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless directed by a physician. Caregivers should be aware it should not be given to elderly patients with confusion.

Cautions
- Diphenhydramine is a sedating antihistamine and is more likely to make you feel sleepy than other antihistamines. Therefore, it should not be taken before engaging in activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery.
- Extra precautions are urged before this medication is prescribed, especially in elderly patients who are more likely to experience adverse effects such as confusion, dizziness, and drowsiness.
- Diphenhydramine may interact with other medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements. Therefore, inform your healthcare provider of all medications and supplements you are taking before using Nytol Extra Strength.
- Nytol Extra Strength should not be used in patients with certain medical conditions such as asthma, narrow-angle glaucoma, or urinary retention. Additionally, caution should be taken in patients with liver or kidney disease, seizure disorders, and heart disease.
- Misuse of Nytol Extra Strength, such as taking higher than recommended doses, can lead to serious adverse effects such as seizures, coma, and even death. Therefore, follow the recommended dose and do not exceed the maximum daily dose.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using Diphenhydramine, as the effects of the medication on the fetus or infant are not well known.
- Diphenhydramine should not be taken with alcohol or other depressant drugs, as this can increase the risk of severe drowsiness, difficulty breathing, and even death.
- Some individuals may experience an allergic reaction to Diphenhydramine, which can include symptoms such as swelling, rash, and difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
- Withdrawal symptoms may occur after prolonged use of Diphenhydramine. These symptoms can include anxiety, insomnia, and irritability. Gradually reduce the dose of the medication under the guidance of a healthcare provider to avoid these symptoms.
- Taking more than the recommended dose of Diphenhydramine can lead to overdose, which can be life-threatening. Symptoms of an overdose can include confusion, hallucinations, seizures, and cardiac arrest. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
