Drug Description

Indications

Spiriva inhalers are formulated with tiotropium bromide, a potent anticholinergic bronchodilator, and antimuscarinic agent.

The active ingredient operates within the pulmonary system, impeding the muscarinic receptors located on the surrounding airway muscles.

This mechanism of action facilitates airway muscle relaxation and dilation, resulting in improved respiratory function. Consistent usage of these inhalers ensures sustained airway patency.

Uses and Dosage

Your physician will provide comprehensive instructions on the appropriate usage of Spiriva, including dosing and frequency of administration. Adherence to your doctor’s directives is of utmost importance.

Spiriva is inhaled using an inhaler device, delivering the medication directly to the lungs.

Spiriva is not intended for use as a rescue inhaler. This medication is not meant to provide relief from acute breathing difficulties associated with asthma or COPD.

The inhaler should be used daily to maintain airway patency and prevent respiratory difficulties. In the event of sudden breathing problems or exacerbated symptoms of asthma or COPD, continue to use your prescribed rescue inhaler as directed by your physician.

Caution

Prior to taking Spiriva, discuss your medical history with your physician to ensure that the medication is suitable for you. Certain medical conditions or other factors may impact the appropriateness of Spiriva for your health. These include:

  • Glaucoma: Individuals with a history of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) may have a higher risk of developing acute narrow-angle glaucoma while using Spiriva. This uncommon side effect occurs when there is a sudden increase in pressure inside the eye. If you experience eye pain, blurry vision, redness in the eye, or see halos or colors, seek medical attention immediately. Discuss any history of eye problems with your doctor before beginning Spiriva.
  • Urination difficulties: If you have had difficulty passing urine in the past, you may have a higher risk of experiencing this side effect while using Spiriva. Conditions that may affect your ability to pass urine include an enlarged prostate or a bladder-neck obstruction. If you have these conditions or have experienced urination difficulties previously, consult your physician before taking Spiriva. If you experience painful urination or difficulty urinating while taking Spiriva, notify your doctor promptly.
