Description

Indications

Zanaflex is a prescription medication indicated for the management of muscle stiffness or spasticity related to neurological conditions like Cerebral palsy. Zanaflex is classified as a Central Alpha-2-Adrenergic Agonist and may be prescribed as a monotherapy or adjunctive therapy. The safety and efficacy of Zanaflex in pediatric patients have not been established, and further research is warranted in this regard.

Zanaflex is a muscle relaxant with a short duration of action. Its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of nerve impulses that transmit pain sensations to the brain.

Uses and Dosage

Zanaflex is generally administered up to thrice daily, with a recommended interval of 6 to 8 hours between doses. do not exceed three doses, equivalent to 36mg, within a 24-hour duration, as excessive intake may result in liver damage.

While Zanaflex can be taken with or without food, you should maintain consistency in administration mode. Alternating between taking tizanidine with or without food can decrease its effectiveness or lead to heightened side effects.

Interchanging between Zanaflex capsules and tablets may cause changes in side effects or efficacy. Therefore, if any changes are made, inform a physician if any deviations in either side effects or therapeutic outcomes occur.

As Zanaflex is a short-acting medication, its impact is most pronounced between 1 and 3 hours following intake. Accordingly, it should only be taken for activities requiring muscle spasm relief.

Regular liver function tests are essential to monitor the potential adverse effects of Zanaflex on the liver.

In the case of long-term usage, sudden cessation of Zanaflex may result in withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, palpitations, tremors, and anxiety. Therefore, consult with a physician on the appropriate measures to safely discontinue this medication.
