Indications 

Sandomigran DS is a medication that is used to prevent or reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks. It cannot be used to treat headaches once they have already started. Also, it is not intended for treating acute migraine attacks but for preventing future migraines. 

Sandomigran DS contains the active ingredient pizotifen, which belongs to a class of drugs known as serotonin and tryptamine antagonists. It works by affecting chemicals in the brain, specifically serotonin. Serotonin helps stabilize the blood vessels in the brain, preventing them from changing in size and reducing the likelihood of migraine headaches. 

Use and Dosage 

Sandomigraine DS is available in the strength of 1 mg tablets. The tablet can be taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet unless specifically instructed by your healthcare provider.  

The dosage may vary depending on your individual condition, so follow the prescribed dosage recommended by your healthcare provider. The tablet is usually taken once daily, typically at bedtime. Taking it at the same time each day can help you remember to take the medication consistently. 

It may take several weeks of regular use before you notice a decrease in the frequency and severity of migraines. Continue taking the tablet as prescribed, even if you do not experience immediate results. Do not stop taking the medication without consulting your healthcare provider.

• Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes 

Cautions 

• Allergies: Inform your healthcare provider if you have any known allergies to pizotifen or any other medications. Avoid any potential allergic reactions. 
• Pre-existing medical conditions: Pizotifen should be used with caution in individuals with certain medical conditions such as liver or kidney problems, as the medication may affect these conditions.  
• Drug interactions: Pizotifen may interact with other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking to avoid any potential interactions. 
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: The safety of Sandomigraine DS during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been well established.  
• Driving and operating machinery: Sandomigraine DS may cause drowsiness or dizziness as side effects. Be cautious while driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you. 
• Children and adolescents: The safety and effectiveness of Sandomigraine DS in children and adolescents have not been well established. Consult with a pediatrician before using the tablet in individuals under 18 years old. 
• Elderly population: Elderly individuals may be more sensitive to the side effects of Sandomigraine DS, such as drowsiness and dizziness. Use caution and closely monitor their response to the medication. 
• Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol while taking Sandomigraine DS may increase the risk of drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid or limit alcohol intake while on the tablet. 
• Serotonin syndrome: Sandomigraine DS may increase the levels of serotonin in the brain, which could lead to a rare but serious condition known as serotonin syndrome. This condition may cause symptoms such as confusion, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, fever, and muscle stiffness. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. 
• Withdrawal symptoms: Abruptly stopping Sandomigraine DS after long-term use may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as headache, nausea, and irritability.
