Drug Description

Indications

Nature Throid is a thyroid replacement medication prescribed for the treatment of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid).

Nature Throid is also indicated for the treatment and prevention of goiter and for diagnostic purposes in thyroid disorders.

Derived from animal thyroid glands (usually a pig’s), Nature Throid functions as a replacement or supplement for the thyroid hormone when the thyroid gland fails to produce an adequate amount of these hormones.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking Nature Throid and with each prescription refill, carefully review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. If you have any inquiries, consult with your physician or pharmacist.

Nature Throid dosage is determined based on the patient’s medical condition, laboratory test results, and response to the treatment. Age and weight are also considered for children.

Typically, Nature Throid is taken once every morning on an empty stomach, 30-60 minutes before food or caffeine, with an 8 oz glass of water.

If you have already had a meal, this medication should be ingested two hours later, along with an 8 oz glass of water. Allow 30-60 minutes before eating or consuming food and caffeine.

For optimal results, take Nature Throid at a consistent time daily, exactly as directed.

Do not alter the prescribed dosage and frequency of intake without your doctor’s approval.

Inform your doctor if your condition deteriorates or persists beyond a few weeks of taking Nature Throid. Refrain from discontinuing this medication without seeking advice from your doctor first.

Side Effects

Hair loss is a common side effect of Nature Throid in the initial months of treatment, which is typically temporary and attributed to medication adjustment. If it persists or worsens, seek guidance from a healthcare professional.

Serious Side Effects

Nature Throid does not usually cause severe side effects. However, promptly inform your physician if you experience severe but uncommon symptoms associated with elevated thyroid hormone levels. These may include:

  • Heightened perspiration
  • Heat sensitivity
  • Alterations in mental disposition (e.g., nervousness or mood swings)
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea
  • Trembling
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty breathing

Allergic Reactions

Although rare, a severe allergic reaction to Nature Throid may occur. Get immediate medical help if any of the following symptoms arise:

  • Rash
  • Itching or swelling, particularly in the face, tongue, and throat
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing

This list does not contain all the potential side effects of Nature Throid. If any unlisted effects are experienced, tell your doctor promptly.

Cautions

Before starting treatment with Nature Throid, inform your doctor and pharmacist if you have any known hypersensitivities, especially to pork, other medications, or any of the ingredients present in Nature Throid tablets.

To ensure Nature Throid is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of:

  • Thyrotoxicosis (increased thyroid hormones)
  • Decreased adrenal gland function
  • Heart disease (e.g., coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat)
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes

Inform your doctor and pharmacist about all medications, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you are currently or planning to use, to mitigate the risk of drug interaction with Nature Throid.

To optimize the absorption of thyroid hormone, separate the following drugs from Nature Throid by a minimum of 4 hours. This precaution is necessary as these medications have the potential to diminish the amount of absorbed thyroid hormone:

  • Cholestyramine
  • Colestipol
  • Colesevelam
  • Antacids
  • Sucralfate
  • Simethicone
  • Iron
  • Sodium polystyrene sulfonate
  • Calcium carbonate
  • Orlistat

Consult with your physician regarding adjusting your dosage if you consume walnuts, infant soy formula, cottonseed meal, or high-fiber foods, as they may decrease the absorption of Nature-Throid.

Based on current information, Nature Throid may be suitable for use during pregnancy. However, inform your doctor if you are pregnant, as dosage adjustments may be necessary.

Small quantities of desiccated thyroid may be present in breast milk, but it is unlikely to cause harm to a nursing baby. Nevertheless, inform your doctor if you are breastfeeding before using this medication.
