Drug Description

Indications

NP-Thyroid is a prescription medication indicated for the management of hypothyroidism and goiter. It may be used alone or in combination with other medications to address these conditions. NP-Thyroid is classified as a Thyroid Product.

Uses and Dosage

Follow all instructions provided on your prescription label. Your doctor may periodically adjust your dosage to ensure the best possible outcome. Do not exceed or reduce the prescribed dose of NP Thyroid.

While taking desiccated thyroid, frequent blood tests may be necessary. Continue using this medication as directed by your doctor, even if you feel fine. In most cases, thyroid medication will need to be taken for the remainder of your life.

The dosage of thyroid hormones is customized for each patient based on their response and laboratory findings. Thyroid hormones are taken orally, and injectable levothyroxine sodium may be administered intravenously in acute or emergency situations, such as during total parenteral nutrition or treatment of myxedema coma when oral administration is not possible or desirable. Intramuscular injection is not recommended due to reported poor absorption.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any symptoms of thyroid toxicity, such as chest pain, rapid or irregular heartbeats, excessive sweating or nervousness.

If you are scheduled for surgery, inform your surgeon beforehand that you are using desiccated thyroid. You may need to discontinue the medication temporarily.

Side Effects

Allergic Reactions

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including:

  • Rash
  • Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat)
  • Severe dizziness
  • Trouble breathing

Caution

Before taking thyroid hormone, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have any allergies to it, pork products, or any other substances. This medication may contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Consult with your pharmacist for more information.

Prior to using this medication, provide your medical history to your doctor or pharmacist, especially if you have had an increased level of thyroid hormones (thyrotoxicosis), decreased adrenal gland function, heart disease (such as coronary artery disease, irregular heartbeat), high blood pressure, or diabetes.

If you are planning to have surgery, inform your doctor or dentist about all the medications you are taking, including prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, and herbal products.

The elderly may be more susceptible to side effects of this medication, especially chest pain, fast or irregular heartbeat.

Based on current information, this medication may be used during pregnancy. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, as your dosage may need to be adjusted.
