Lipitor is a medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as statins, which treat high cholesterol levels in the blood. Lipitor is prescribed along with a proper diet to lower the levels of “bad” cholesterol, including LDL and triglycerides, and to raise the levels of “good” cholesterol, HDL.  

Lipitor works by reducing the production of cholesterol by the liver, which can decrease the risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart attacks.

Side Effects 

Allergic Reactions

Severe Side Effects

In rare cases, Lipitor can cause a breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. If you experience any of the following contact your doctor immediately: 

• Unexplained muscle pain  
• Tenderness or weakness, along with fever, unusual fatigue, and dark urine, contact your doctor immediately 

Contact your doctor at once if you experience: 

• Muscle weakness in your hips, shoulders, neck, and back 
• Trouble lifting your arms 
• Trouble climbing or standing 
• Upper stomach pain 
• Weakness 
• Tired feeling 
• Loss of appetite 
• Dark urine 
• Yellowing of the skin or eyes (signs of liver problems) 
• Little or no urinating 
• Swelling in your feet or ankles 
• Feeling tired or short of breath (signs of kidney problems) 

Common Side Effects 

• Joint pain 
• Stuffy nose 
• Sore throat 
• Diarrhea 
• Pain in your arms or legs  

Cautions 

Lipitor should not be taken by pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with liver disease, or those who have had an allergic reaction to Lipitor in the past. 

If you become pregnant while taking Lipitor, stop taking the medication and notify your doctor immediately. 

Inform all of your healthcare providers about any medications you are currently taking or plan to start or stop using, as serious drug interactions can occur when certain medicines are used together with Lipitor. 

Atorvastatin, the active ingredient in Lipitor, has the potential to cause the breakdown of skeletal muscle tissue, leading to kidney failure. If you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, along with fever, unusual fatigue, or dark-colored urine, seek medical attention immediately. 

Following a cholesterol-lowering diet plan is important to ensure the effectiveness of Lipitor. Foods high in fat or cholesterol should be avoided. 

Lipitor takes approximately 2 weeks to start working, and it should be used in conjunction with a complete program of treatment that includes diet, exercise, and weight control. Follow your diet, medication, and exercise routines carefully to achieve the best results.
