Lofibra is a prescribed medication used in conjunction with dietary changes to lower elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (Total-C), triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B (Apo B) while increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in adults diagnosed with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia.

Lofibra is also indicated as adjunctive therapy, in conjunction with dietary modifications, for treating severe hypertriglyceridemia in adult patients. In diabetic patients with fasting chylomicronemia, achieving better glycemic control often eliminates the requirement for pharmacological intervention.

Belonging to a group of drugs known as “fibrates,” Lofibra enhances the activity of a naturally occurring enzyme responsible for breaking down fats in the bloodstream.

Uses and Dosage

Before taking Lofibra and with each prescription refill, thoroughly review its medication guide and patient information leaflet. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.

Lofibra dosage may vary per individual based on their medical condition and response to the treatment.

Typically, this medication is taken once daily with a meal or as prescribed by the doctor.

For optimal results, take Lofibra regularly around the same time(s) daily. Avoid taking more or less than the recommended dose, and do not exceed the prescribed frequency and duration of intake.

Regular lipid level monitoring is recommended, and dosage reduction may be necessary if levels fall considerably below the target range.

Continue taking Lofibra even if you are feeling well, as most individuals with high cholesterol and triglycerides do not exhibit symptoms.

The full benefits of this medication may take up to two months to become apparent. Consult your doctor before discontinuing treatment.

Before starting treatment with Lofibra, inform your doctor and pharmacist if you have any known hypersensitivities, especially to any fenofibrate products, other medications, or any ingredients present in Lofibra tablets.

To ensure Lofibra is safe for you, disclose to your physician your medical background, especially if you have a history of:

  • Kidney disease
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Liver disease (e.g., biliary cholangitis or hepatitis)
  • Alcohol use

Some products may interact with Lofibra, including “blood thinners” (e.g., warfarin). To reduce the risk of such drug interactions, inform all healthcare providers of your current use of prescription and non-prescription drugs, dietary supplements, and herbal products.

While taking Lofibra, avoid using medications that contain fenofibric acid, as fenofibrate and fenofibric acid are very similar.

To ensure proper absorption of Lofibra, avoid taking bile acid-binding resins like cholestyramine or colestipol at the same time. Instead, take Lofibra either one hour before or four to six hours after these medications to prevent any binding that may inhibit its effectiveness.

The use of Lofibra during pregnancy should only be considered if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Consult your doctor before use.

Breast-feeding is not advised while taking Lofibra and for 5 days after cessation due to potential harm to the infant from the unknown transfer of fenofibrate into breast milk. Consult your physician before breast-feeding when taking this medication.
