Indications 

Pravachol (pravastatin sodium) is indicated for preventing cardiovascular disease in hypercholesterolemic patients. In patients without clinically evident coronary heart disease (CHD), reducing the risk of myocardial infarction, undergoing myocardial revascularization procedures, and cardiovascular mortality are suggested. In patients with clinically evident CHD, it reduces the risk of total mortality, coronary death, MI, stroke/TIA and slows the progression of coronary atherosclerosis. PRAVACHOL is indicated for treating hyperlipidemia, elevated serum TG levels, primary dysbetalipoproteinemia, and heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. 

Uses and Dosage 

Pravastatin, a type of statin medication, is used along with a healthy diet to reduce LDL and triglycerides and increase HDL in the blood, which lowers the risk of heart disease and prevents strokes and heart attacks. Other lifestyle changes like exercise, weight loss, and quitting smoking should also be adopted to get the best results. The medication can be taken with or without food once daily, based on the doctor’s directions, medical condition, age, and other medications. Inform the doctor and pharmacist about all the products used, including prescription and nonprescription drugs and herbal products.

Pravachol has the potential to cause serious side effects such as:  

• Muscle pain 
• Tenderness 
• Weakness 
• Fever 
• Chest pain 

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

• Vomiting 
• Diarrhea 
• Headache 
• Cold symptoms

Cautions 

You must inform your healthcare provider of all medications you currently take, including prescription, nonprescription, and herbal products, as they may interact with pravastatin. Examples of drugs that may interact with pravastatin include certain antibiotics, antifungal medications, and immunosuppressive drugs. Your healthcare provider may need to adjust your dose of pravastatin or monitor you more closely if you are taking certain medications.
